Uganda, known affectionately as the “Pearl of Africa”, is one of Africa’s hidden gems, worth your discovery.
The country was given this special name by the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Winston Churchill, for its natural beauty.
Uganda is located in the Eastern part of Africa, with borders with Kenya (West), Tanzania and Rwanda (South), DRC (East) and South Sudan (North).
TRAVEL INTO KAMPALA, UGANDA
Uganda is well connected to regional counties such as Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, DRC, Burundi and Tanzania through high quality road networks.
It is also well connected to these neighbouring countries and to most of the African countries though scores of Ugandan, African and global airlines.
Kampala does not have it’s own airport.
The port of entry into Kampala is the Entebbe International Airport, which is located about 50 km away, or 1 hour by road.
Regular taxis are available from the Airport at between USD 30-50, one way.
If you are staying at any of the major hotels during your stay in Kampala, you can ask the hotel for AIRPORT TAXI PICKUP services, which may be charged.
International online taxi services UBER and BOLT are available from the Airport and for any movements within Kampala, Entebbe and their environs.
You are advised to download the App of either of the taxi service providers before you leave your country of origin.
FOREIGN MONEY EXCHANGE
Uganda has a liberal foreign currency exchange protocol, with quite easy access to where you may change your money from.
These include foex bureaux at the Entebbe International Airport, several locations within Entebbe and Kampala.
Further, your hotel can advice you on options to use whenever you need to exchange your cash.
It is advicable to have some local UGX currency during your stay in Kampala, especially if you need to move around the city or to buy anything during your stay.
Debit and credit cards are widely accepted at major hotels, supermarkets and restaurants in Uganda.
VACCINATIONS & VISA
Yellow fever vaccination is a priority for travel into Uganda, with a physical certificate a basic requirement. For those without proof of this vaccination, you can pay and receive the jab at the Airport from Ministry of Health officials.

The gray-crowned crane: The gray-crowned crane is Uganda’s national bird and is featured on the national flag and coat of arms
Home of the Big Five: Uganda is home to the Big Five animals: lion, leopard, elephant, rhinocerose, and buffalo. It is also hoem to the rare tree climbing lion.
Biodiversity: Uganda is one of the world’s most biodiverse countries, with open grasslands, tropical forests, lakes and rivers, semi-arid regions, snow-capped mountains, birds and all manner of animals.
The Rwenzori Mountains: The snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, which straddle the border between Ugand and DRC, are thought to be the legendary “Mountains of the Moon”
Cultural diversity: Uganda has over 56 ethnic groups, each with their own languages, traditions, music, and dance.
Food diversity: Uganda is one of the few food secure countries in Africa, with abundant agricultural production of some of the key crops (maize, coffee, banana, tea, sorghum/millet, soybeans, beans and lentils, spices) and livestock and fish products (milk, cattle, chicken, fish, goats etc.)
Land of a lakes, rivers and more: Uganda has abundant water resources, with a reported 165 lakes across the country. Lake Victoria, which is Africa’s largest water body, straddles the south eastern side of Uganda, with hundreds of rivers, streams and wetlands, among key attributes.
